If you’ve ever considered working with one, or at least Googling it, one of your first questions is what does a business coach actually do? Who are they? Why should you work with one? And how can they help your business?
Here’s our take on what makes a good coach or mentor, and what they should actually do for you:
1. Listen and learn
The first thing a good business coach does is listen and learn. They should be an excellent listener, and an active one, and they should take time to learn everything that they can about your business and your plans for its development. They should ask questions, and be open to learning themselves. Then of course they should be ready to share their own learning and experience with you.
2. Advise, not dictate
If you want to be told what to do, you’d seek out a teacher, or someone else in a more ‘instructional’ capacity. But while this kind of education has its place, it doesn’t necessarily lay the groundwork for long term development. Learning the theory is one thing, but you need to be able to apply it, and do so in the long term. Therefore, a good business coach should advise and guide, rather than dictate and dominate.
3. Capture the dream
By choosing to work with a business coach, you probably have some sort of business dream. Some sort of idea of what success looks like to you. A key role for the coach is therefore to help you to capture that dream and turn it into a definable vision for your business. They should also acknowledge that everyone’s dream is different, and respect that.
4. Figure out how
This fourth point in our discussion about what a business coach will do for you and your business is squarely rooted in strategy. In how you’re going to achieve that vision. A good business coach will help you to put together a short-, medium- and long-term strategy for how you’re going to achieve your goals.
5. Get it done
As we mention above, a good business coach won’t tell you what to do. They should question, guide and prompt you to make decisions and take action on your own. A business coach does, for example, make introductions for you to people who can help you to progress. But they should not tell you exactly how to handle the resulting meeting. They should empower you to get things done, rather than do them for you. Then, they should hold you accountable against your goals and your progress.
Business coaching, the Tabono way
How does all of this translate to our own business coaching approach? We’ve talked before on this blog about how the fact that our clients work with both of our co-founders. This means that you get double the above. Two people to guide you and share their experiences. Two people to work on your vision and strategy alongside you. And two people to hold you accountable and support you as you move forward towards your goals.
That said though, we don’t promise you success. We don’t guarantee that you’ll ‘5x’ your revenue or turn five figures into six. We don’t have a magic wand or promise to share the ‘secret ingredient’ which will catapult you and your business to the next level.
Why? Because you, not us, are the key to your own success.
You have to want to set and work towards your goals. You have to be brave enough to get out of your comfort zone and have the desire to make positive changes. Then you have to have the willingness to work hard, the openness to discuss new ideas and the persistence to keep going. As Marie Forleo says:
The key to success is to start before you are ready.Marie Forleo
If you promise to do these things, we promise to give you the best of our experience, our support and ourselves. We will be your advisers and your guides. Your cheerleaders and supporters. We promise to challenge you and hold you accountable. And whatever success looks like to you, we promise to do everything we can to help you to get there.
The business coaching journey starts with a first step, and if you’re considering taking that first step with us, get in touch. Let’s have a chat about your business dreams and explore how working with We Are Tabono could help you to achieve them.
