So, are you an entrepreneur or a freelancer? What’s your gut reaction when it comes to answering this question?

I was reading an article earlier on this week that considered this very question. Or more precisely, it talked about the difference between being a freelancer and an entrepreneur, and how to move from one to the other.

This quote by Seth Godin, as cited in the article, explains things rather well:

Freelancers get paid for their work. If you’re a freelance copywriter, you get paid when you work. Entrepreneurs use other people’s money to build a business bigger than themselves so that they can get paid when they sleep.

Seth Godin

A middle ground.

That got me thinking about my own situation. Am I a freelancer? Or an entrepreneur?

Certainly when I started out on my own, I was without doubt, a freelancer. I had clients that I invoiced at the end of each month, and they paid me accordingly.

But since We Are Tabono was created, this changed. We’re a registered company, and that makes me a Company Director. It’s about more than just me now. I own a percentage of something, and that means I have responsibilities. To go back to Godin’s quote above, both Chloe and I want to create something that’s bigger than ourselves.

However, we’re not there yet. We don’t use other people’s money at this stage, and having only been trading for a few months at the time of writing, we certainly aren’t making money while we sleep!

So is there a middle ground? We definitely aren’t freelancers, but equally, if the definition above is to be believed, we aren’t yet ‘true’ entrepreneurs either. Perhaps we are on the road to entrepreneurship. Perhaps that’s the middle ground.

But what I do know is that between Chloe and I, we have the skills and determination that we need to succeed; an absolute passion for what we do; and an amazing support team behind us.
